Employers: Can you tell new Civil Engineering graduates a salary range they can expect this year? Also, do you have suggestions on how to handle the "salary" question in an interview? Smiley

In the public sector, the answer to this question is simple.  We are similar to CarMax when it comes to the "No Haggle" approach.  At my organization,  with a BSCE and no experience you come in as a broad/band grade 13/14 step 12 which currently gets you a base salary of $45,498.  We have been able to add a $4,000 signing bonus to that first year salary.   The salary scale changes (hopefully) every fiscal year when we receive Cost of Living Adjustments and/or "bumps" in the scale (usually 1-4%).

This is a tough question to answer thorougly, although Jeff H. provided some insight on the public sector.  In the private sector you have two forces at work, the small company and the large company.  The large company, in general, can offer more money than the smaller company and each individual firm has its own pay scale.  I would say that you will find a significant range of starting salaries dependent on both company size and the area in which you are looking.  If I was to render an opinion I would say that starting salaries in the private sector could range from $37,500 for a small rural type firm up to $55,000 for a large firm in a major city.

With respect to your second question, the best thing for a graduate to do is do his research of the area and to have an idea of what the going rate is.  Also do not be intimidate or afraid to talk about salary during an interview.

At Washington State University, the average salary for the graduating class of Civil Engineers was $51,000+.  One student was as high as $78k.

Jeff H info is similiar.  Regarding salary, talk about it up front and natural...like any relationship a person is interested in.  Honesty is a very good policy.

I don't know what the stats were this last year, but the year before, every WSU CE student had a job.....6 months before they graduated.

WSU has an awesome engineering school, very applications, problem solving oriented.
