The Shortage of Civil Engineers

Earlier today I posted on our blog a recent Q&A I participated in that will be published in this month's Water & Wastewater Digest. The Q&A was done to take a look at why there is a shortage of civil engineers, and what needs to be done to overcome this issue. I 've posted my ideas on the blog; please take a look and let me know what you think. I would be interested in seeing what your thoughts and ideas are, and how they might differ from what I say.
Cheers!

Perhaps the shortage is more a perception than a reality?
Job listings almost always have specific years of experience, e.g., 1 to 3 or 3 to 5, as a criteria. There are few civil engineers with less than 5 years of experience who are so discouraged by their employer that they are seeking a new position.
If employers stopped listing years of experience and described the content of the job, they may well hire more experienced engineers who need and want a new challenge. Employers should hire for talent not just for years of experience.

Why there is a shortage of Civil engineers is the same reason there is a global talent crisis.
The baby boomers are just now getting into their retirement age and this means that one of the largest population groups is going to start leaving the workforce. Additionally it is not going to get any better soon.
There are a few other reasons why this is happening but this is one of the main issues.
