I am a recent college graduate origonally from the east coast (CT).  I have recently moved to Portland, OR and have been job searching for almost 2 months now.  I have applied for many jobs online but have not had too many responses despite my follow up emails and phone calls.  I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to network with Civil and Environmental Engineering companies in my area.  I know very few people outside of New England and am trying to find a way to connect with a company.
thanks for your help!

Amy,

Have you tried joining local chapters of various engineering groups or associations in your area, such as the ASCE?  The local chapters generally have meetings or seminars where you could meet people that work at various local companies.

Hey Amy.  It is a difficult economy with a lot of competition for jobs these days, so not only are you fighting that big battle, you are likely competing with many other candidates who have the local experience which may put them to the top of the list.  That being said, there is something to be said for persistence.  If you are able to, find out exactly who the hiring manager is for the division you are looking to apply for and contact them directly, it shows initiative and separates yourself from all the other candidates who might be going through an already understaffed and overworked Human Resources Department.  Also, if you are able to get the hiring manager on the phone and they indicate that they do not have any opportunities, ALWAYS ASK THEM if they have any friends or colleagues at any other firms or municipalities that might have an open position.  Also, do not limit yourself to ads you see, as many open positions are never even advertised...so just because you do not see a job posting on a company website site, a job board, newspaper or magazine does not mean that an opportunity does not exist.  Good Luck.

I agree with the last two posts.  I was in a similar situation while I was leaving the miltary last year.  I was focusing my search on Texas but was stationed in Ohio.  I leveraged the professional society that was was involved in (the Society of American Miltary Engineers) to contact members that were in the Dallas market.  Networking is always a start but once you get that interview be ready to perform because you never know how long it might take to get another one.  Good luck and unfortunately I do not know anyone in Portland.
