We have received questions for advice on resumes.... Huh

what should be included?

how long should the resume be (does it really have to be limited to 2 pages when a candidate has 2 pages of diverse and interesting projects?)

do dates ALWAYS need to be included?

should reasons for leaving a job be included at the end of each job description?

should references be included or only upon request?

does a resume HAVE to have an objective (after all everyone wants to work for a "progressive company that values it's employees and clients")

Please assist job seekers at all levels and offer your advice!

Your questions:

We have received questions for advice on resumes....

what should be included?

1. how long should the resume be (does it really have to be limited to 2 pages when a candidate has 2 pages of diverse and interesting projects?)

Answer: 1 page for an entry level, 2 pages for most all others.  Projects and cover letters are not considered part of the resume.

2. do dates ALWAYS need to be included?

Answer: Yes, always include month and year on a chronological resume.

3. should reasons for leaving a job be included at the end of each job description?

Answer: No, unless it was because of a layoff and that might be considered an exception.  Save it for the interview.

4.  should references be included or only upon request?

No, again, save them for the interview or on the application.  The phrase is now outdated and rarely used.  It's kind of obvious you'll give them to the interviewer eventually, especially if you are under serious consideration.

5.  does a resume HAVE to have an objective (after all everyone wants to work for a "progressive company that values it's employees and clients")

Answer: Yes, but you should gear the objective to the actual position for which you are applying.  Also, the phrase "people person" is also over used.  Remember, you are seeking a position in the company, insure you also include a summary which indicates that what they're looking for is what you bring to the table.

Good luck.

When it comes to resumes, format, information to be included, EVERYONE has a different opinion...here is mine:

1.  how long should the resume be (does it really have to be limited to 2 pages when a candidate has 2 pages of diverse and interesting projects?)

Tell me what you are doing and what you have done!  If it is longer that 2 pages, so be it.

2.  do dates ALWAYS need to be included?

Yes.

3.  should reasons for leaving a job be included at the end of each job description?

Wouldn't be a bad thing, especially if you have jumped around.

4.  should references be included or only upon request?

Upon request.

5.  does a resume HAVE to have an objective (after all everyone wants to work for a "progressive company that values it's employees and clients")

Objectives are a waste of time; UNLESS, you are SOOOOO specific:  "I want to work for a publically held company, be based in Hawaii, work on DOT hi visitbility jobs, have at least 80% of my health care paid, work in an office with green walls and a window."   IF you make the objective too vague, then why have one?  If you make the objective specific to the job you are applying for, what if there was another opportunity, but you get knocked out because your objective didn't mention that other possibility.   CAN YOU TELL THIS IS A PET PEEVE FOR ME?!?  Grin

Recruiter Chic nailed it head on.....good summary.  The objective (# 5) is very well put.  I'd also suggest you add a summary to your resume, encapsulating your background.  Again, Chic, good job.
