Okay, the train has pulled into ventilation station and I am ready to unload...you'll love this one. A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by a candidate who was recently laid off by a firm in Dallas. He was a 3 year EIT, sitting for his PE this October, and he was working here in the U.S. on an H1 Visa. The Visa is near expiration and the company that just laid him off will only carry his visa for another week or so. I get the candidate a phone interview at night, the next day he is invited down to Houston, the following day an offer is made and he verbally accepts. Of course, as he verbally accepted over the phone to me, the candidate was sitting in BWI waiting for a flight back to Dallas as he was interviewing with a firm in Baltimore. Early the next week I found that he had not contacted my client to begin the paperwork for the visa. I finally track him down and he tells me that he received an offer from the firm in Baltimore, more money and they are willing to pay ALL COSTS for him to maintain his visa, and he was really psyched about Baltimore. I did all I could to change his mind but it didn't happen, done deal, he's going to Baltimore. I call my client and advise them as to what happened, everyone is disappointed but we all move on. Two days later the candidate calls me back and tells me he has had a change of heart and now he wants my offer. Turns out when I had talked to him last week he hadn't actually received the offer like he told me, but he was actually only told that he would receive an offer. Well, when he finally got the offer all of his expenses were covered, but he was offered the same salary he was making in Dallas - Baltimore has at least a 10% higher COL, so he could now not afford to live there. I go back to my client, tell them the good news, but its too late as they have since offered the job to another candidate who accepted. SOOOOOOOOOOOO annoyed, but you know what, I called my candidate and told him he was SOL and he should've played it straight with me and not tried to pull those shenanigans. Oh well...annoyed and out of a fee, but the pipeline is filling up again, so its all good.
Phew, thanks for listening to me vent here at the Ventilation Station...ALL ABOARD!
